With Video Manager, you can easily create subtitles for your films to make them more accessible. You can create new subtitles, upload your own text files, or use Mediaflow's auto transcription to create subtitles automatically.
Create subtitles
In the Video Manager, create a new subtitle by clicking Add track and selecting Subtitle & CC. Then, choose whether to create a new subtitle, generate an automatic subtitle, or upload a text file.
Create new subtitles
To create new text blocks, click on Add subtitle block and then type your text in the block. You can add text and edit it in the blocks on the right and on the timeline. You can also select and drag your text blocks to match the audio in the film. When you're done, save your changes and then you can close down the dialogue.
Generate a subtitle with auto transcription
If you want to create an automatic subtitle with Mediaflow's auto transcription, select Generate with Auto Transcription. Under Language, select the language spoken in the film. The list will show you which languages are supported by the auto transcription. The analysis time varies but typically takes 10-20 seconds per minute of film, and you can continue working on the film in the meantime. Auto-generated subtitles must always be checked and possibly edited afterwards, as they are never perfect.
To edit your text, click on the three dots and select Edit. You can also download your subtitle, duplicate it, and view more information about it, such as which user created it and when.
When a subtitle is created using auto transcription, a small icon appears next to the Publish-toggle.
Upload a text file
If you want to upload your own subtitle, for example, if you have ordered a translation from an agency, click Select file. Then click on the plus and upload a file from Mediaflow or from a folder on your computer. Then, select the language of the uploaded subtitle.
Manage and edit subtitles
To work with a subtitle, click on the three dots and select Edit. The subtitle opens in edit mode, where you can change, add and delete text. You work with your text in text blocks on a timeline. If you want to add a text block, you can do so by hovering between two lines of text on the right. You will then see a green plus sign indicating that there is room to add a new block. If you don't see a green plus, this means that there is not enough space. There must be at least a three-second gap for you to add a new block.
You can also add a new block to the timeline by hovering between two blocks. If there is enough space, you will see a green plus, which you can click to add a new block.
If you want to alter something in the text, you can do so either in the lines of text on the right or directly in the text itself in the video player.
If you use the auto transcription, the text is automatically synced with the audio in the film. If you create your own subtitles, you must synchronise the text with the audio by moving your text blocks. You can move a block of text by selecting it and dragging it with your mouse. Pull the edges of the block to make it longer or shorter.
You need to activate your subtitle for it to be visible to viewers. When the toggle is blue, it is published. A text symbol will then appear in the video player in all places where the current film is embedded, and viewers can choose to turn on subtitles.
Version history for subtitles
Under the Version history tab, you can go back to see previous versions of your subtitle. You can see which user created the subtitle and when changes were made. You can also restore and revert to an earlier version of your subtitle here.
Settings for subtitles
Under the Settings tab, you can make various settings for your subtitle. You can choose the language and whether it is a subtitle, a text for the hearing impaired or a text for audio description that can be read by a speech synthesiser. You can also give your subtitle an alias to help you distinguish it from other text tracks.
Adjust the number of characters
To maximise the readability of your subtitle, it is important not to use too many characters on a line. If you have too many characters, you will be warned by the text turning red. You can also see to the right of the text how many characters are allowed and how many characters you have used. You can easily move text down to the next line by pressing enter. Under Settings, choose how many characters you want to allow on a line.
